A trip that has been accomplished many times before? Of course, but this time nine young people with special needs, aged between 13 and 22 will sail ‘Hope’, ‘Faith’ and ‘Charity’ the BVI Watersports Centre’s 19 foot keelboats, around Tortola – calling in at Cooper Island and Jost Van Dyke on 11th – 13th June 2010.
This is their way of raising funds and community awareness for the three Helmsmen of the trip – Delroy Gordon. Lenford Pope and Glenford Gordon.
These three teenagers – all pupils (one graduated) of The BVI Technical and Vocational Institute, hope to travel to England to compete in the Royal Yachting Association’s – Sailability MultiClass Regatta in August 2010. The funds raised from the circumnavigation, together with the BVI Olympic Committee’s pledge to cover the cost of one return flight, will go directly to this trip. Golden Hind Chandlery and Gill Marine, have come onboard with generous offers of reduced costs and support for the athletes in providing personal sailing gear, essential for the UK event.

Twelve months from now, Special Olympics BVI will compete in the SO World Games in Athens, Greece. The British Virgin Islands are one of 24 Special Olympics programmes in the Caribbean, but we are the only country with sailors in their quota for the summer games! We will be sending a team of 10 including 3 unified athletes.
The RYA Sailability Multiclass Regatta held on Rutland Water, in central England, is the only international opportunity to expose our top 3 helms in the twelve months left, of the lead-up campaign to Athens.
You can contribute directly to the extensive costs of the August trip, by sponsoring this special circumnavigation of Tortola and some of her outlying islands. Glenford, Delroy and Lenford will helm the 3 Squibs all the way around, crewed by fellow members of Sailability BVI. The sail will be supported by the BVIWSC team.
A sponsor form will be circulated by the young sailors and their families, together with members and friends of Special Olympics BVI and Sailability BVI. If you would like to sponsor a leg, a mile or a completed voyage, please add your name and contact details, or contact Alison at [email protected] (Tel. 494 0669) and email your pledge.
