PREMIER: ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE

Tuesday, March 11 – Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, has expressed his commitment to the improvement of the Territory’s electrical infrastructure.

In his 2008 Budget Address last week, the Premier said that notwithstanding the escalation of market prices for fuel costs, improved electrical infrastructure is of paramount importance to the Government.
“The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) will continue its efforts to ensure a continuous and reliable supply of electricity to the entire population of the British Virgin Islands,” the Premier and Minister of Finance said in his budget address.

The Premier said that in keeping with the vision for an improved Road Town, The BVI Electricity Corporation plans to complete the ongoing project to relocate all overhead lines in the Wickham’s Cay I area underground, in the first quarter of 2008.

As such, the BVIEC will resume work on the feeder relocation programme on Saturday March 15 and Sunday, March 16 in two areas from Bobby’s Supermarket on DeCastro Street to the QUASTISKY Building near the round-about and along Waterfront Drive from the Peebles Hospital parking lot to the former Banco Popular building.

Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to proceed with caution when approaching these areas and to use designated alternate traffic routes.

The feeder relocation programme started in October 2007 with an estimated project cost of $1.5M. Feeders are being placed underground to upgrade the electrical infrastructure of the commercial and financial district, beautify Road Town and provide the necessary reserve capacity to supply Wickham’s Cay I.
