Editor’s Letter, August 2014
August in the BVI is synonymous with one of the greatest parties and vacations the islands offer – The BVI Emancipation Festival – a carnival distinguished in different ways across the world. This year, it’s the 60th anniversary and the celebration line-up is looking greater than ever.
In the BVI, with this festivity and frivolity comes a welcomed three days holiday for residents, and for any visitors, this is a perfect point to absorb the Territory’s culture and socialising.
At this time of year for our magazine, we could not go without covering the impending activities of Festival and contributor Kim Huish generously provides a concise account of the history surrounding this immense celebration as well as what spectators and participants can expect.

Home accessories retailer House joins the festivities, promoting some of their colourful carnival flair in their products, found in the Things We Love column this issue. And, we wouldn’t be a property publication without reviewing some great homes, contemplating the challenging choice that many property buyers have to make – do you purchase a property in the hills like The Roost with its awe-inspiring view, or real estate on the waterfront like Dos Sols Villa observing the enigmatic and epic sea.
Another huge occasion commencing this month is our very own annual vote: The Virgin Islands Property and Yacht Readers’ Choice awards. Their initiation has shocked us in their quick return; I’m sure you will agree, this year has truly gone by faster than any other! Have your say and assist in creating a comprehensive guide of the best of the BVI by casting your vote with a chance to win some great prizes.
Also this month, look out for The Great Festival Sloop Shootout and Heritage Regatta – this issue we peek into BVI sailing history with the assistance of Maritime Museum Curator Geoff Brooks, sharing his enthusiasm about this powerful cultural experience.
Additionally, we have an interesting profile this month in BVIslander Kristin Frazer, who amazed us with her unique talent and accomplishments.

In closing, we wish you a great Festival and/or enjoyable vacation time, where ever you may be.
